Regina SK- After a crossfire call in Round #3 knocked Kavis Drake & Denim Ross down in the average, Ross promised that the young duo would be bringing the heat in Round #4. For those of us who had been watching them in the first 3 rounds it was questionable on how they could get any faster but Ross was right, they had even more gas in the tank.
Round #4 seemed to have everything go wrong for the team ropers, starting with Chase Simpson’s heel rope hooking underneath his horse’s tail which prevented him from throwing. This unfortunate circumstance was followed with more bad luck including a couple of waved off head loops and a barrier interfering with Luke Skocdopole’s head loop.
By the time Drake & Ross backed in the box, there was only one time on the board (a business man’s 5.4 from Ullery & McLeod). With only two teams behind them, Drake & Ross could have easily made a jackpot run to guarantee a solid average cheque and no worse then 4th in the round. But they promised they’d bring the HEAT and that’s exactly what they were going to do.
Drake hit the barrier perfect, took 2 swings and strapped it on the black steer with a crisp head loop. Wasting no time, he set the steer up for Denim, who delivered a picture perfect heel loop. Ross came tight on 2 feet, Drake faced up and the flag dropped for a time of 3.9 seconds… the fastest time of the week to put the pressure on the final 2 teams.
After an unfortunate leg for McLeod & Chappel and a no time for Quam & Wigemyr, Drake & Ross would not only win the final round but jump to #1 in the average as well.
The young duo walked away the Maple Leaf Circuit Finals Champions, earning nearly $5,800 during their time in Regina. They would also earn a spot at the NFR Open which Drake unfortunately cannot attend due to his young age.
Nonetheless, the duo set the Brandt Centre on fire this week and set themselves up for success in the 2024 CPRA season.
