Kolton Schmidt is back at the Canadian Finals for the 9th time (we think). The 2013 Canadian Champion Header & 2x NFR Qualifier put together a strong season alongside Oklahoma's Landen Glenn to enter Edmonton as the 8th ranked header with $22,064 in CPRA Season earnings. The duo also ventured across the border throughout the season, where Kolton collected $56,798 in earnings to sit 35th in the PRCA Standings.
Question: So how's it feel heading to another CFR? How was your season?
Answer: Oh man, I'm excited. I'm definitely curious on what it's going to be like in there. When I think of Edmonton, I think of the old Rexall Place. It's kind of neat, the young guys and us old guys, it's a first for all of us. Our season started off real good, I got that new mare. She got a little bit green at the end of the year and we went through some learning curves. Kind of took turns screwing up and we didn't finish where we wanted to finish but I'm grateful for the Canadian Finals and I'm excited to get Landen up in that building and see how it goes.
Question: How'd you guys end up roping together?
Answer: I don't really know honestly. Last fall, we were both kind of needing a run. I was on his case about wanting to rope with him, he's so fast. He's one of those young guys coming up that I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to rope with him. I wish I would have done a better job for him, I think he ropes outstanding and is going to have a really good career.
Question: What's your new horse?
Answer: Her name is 'Rhianna' or CARTERS WON TIME OUT. She's a mare I bought from A&C Rope Horses which is the Richard's. She's a ONE TIME HONOUR and just a real cool mare. She's not real big but she hits the ground real good, she has really good timing, she's been fun to ride, she fits my style and I think in the future she's going to be real good for me. She already has done good for me. I'm excited about that mare, I really like her.
Question: What head rope do you use?
Answer: I'm a Powerline guy. I used to play around with other kinds but a couple years ago, I told the guy who ties our ropes at Classic, his name is George, to only send me Powerlines from here on out, no matter what I ask for, don't let me change. Soft or Extra Soft.
Question: What's your favorite rodeo up here?
Answer: Man that's a tricky question because the obvious answer is Ponoka because of what it can do for a guy's year. Getting to rope in the final 4 and getting to win that deal is a feeling that you don't find many other places, that part is hard to beat. But man I love that atmosphere in Armstrong, I'm a sucker for it. I think the performances in Armstrong are as cool as any.
Question: Who's been the biggest influence on your roping career?
Answer: There has been so many people that have helped me, I try to be a student of the game and dabble in so many different things. I'd say the biggest influence just with fundamentals and roping as a whole would be my grandpa Leonard and my dad Ronald. They did so much for me as a kid, getting to ride all those horses and roping and the opportunity that I was provided because of those 2, it'd have to be them guys for sure.
Question: What else do you want to achieve in your career?
Answer: Man I want to get back to the National Finals. I want to be more consistent. There's so many things that I want to achieve, a Canadian Championship, NFRs, Average titles, Gold buckles, all those things are things that you think about and think you should and can achieve. I still feel like I'm capable of it and that's something still something that I'm trying for.
Question: If you could ride another head horse, who's would it be?
Answer: My cousin Tate has some really good horses. I'd like to ride anything that Trey Gallais rides but I'm scared that I'd make em look way worse than he does cause he is so good. Logan Bonnett's horse is amazing. I honestly think that's one of the blessings we have up here in Canada, there's so many people with good horses. That's something we might all take for granted, there's so many good horses up here in Canada that can be used in such a variation of setups. I feel like we have so many good ones to choose from.
Question: How's it feel to be going alongside your little brother Levi?
Answer: That's pretty cool man, that's exciting. I'm pretty pumped for Levi, I hope he enjoys it and gets to take a breath of fresh air and builds off of it to have a good career. I hope he relaxes and trusts his stuff, he did a good job this year and he's earned it. I'm really excited to go there with him.
Question: Who else are you excited to watch in Edmonton?
Answer: Oh shoot, I'm excited to watch everybody. I really can't tell you one team that stands out. I'm excited to watch my buddy team of Tee and Sid, I feel like I'm invested in em and we've been through it all year together and they finished real strong. I want to win more than anybody else but I'm excited to see everybody else have success and just see how the week plays out for everybody.
